Gaining confidence in your writing and reading of short fiction.
A practical course to develop short story writing techniques - structure, dialogue, characterisation, themes and all aspects of the writers craft.
- Respond to and assess pieces of writing with sensitivity
- Identify and develop good writing habits
- Use short story writing skills with greater confidence
- Use your critical abilities (both towards your own and other students work) more.
Intermediate. Beginners are welcome, though some experience of writing and reading fiction is recommended.
Class room exercises, homework, discussion and sharing ideas in a supportive atmosphere. Receiving and giving positive criticism and feedback.
The Tutor
Mary Flanagan is an Irish-American writer living in London. Her three novels (Trust, Rose Reason and Adele) and two collections of short stories (Bad Girls and The Blue Woman) have been widely and well received and translated into eight languages.
Mary has taught creative writing at the University of East Anglia, Leicester University, Birkbeck University, The Arvon Foundation and the Skyros Centre in Greece. She has been a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at the University of Leicester. Her literary criticism and features have appeared in all major newspapers. She currently reviews for The Independent and is at work on another collection of short stories.
