Continuation of the previous two terms on Writing for Children. There will be a chance to review aspects of children’s publishing and to undertake further work developing your own story-writing skills. There will be a particular emphasis on workshop sessions at which writers will receive practical feedback on their own work.
Information on contemporary children’s writing and the modern day children’s publishing scene.
Practical guidance in writing for children.
- analyse your own and others’ writing effectively and sensitively
- use various writing techniques appropriate for the style/age group for which you are writing
- promote your own work further (if desired).
It is preferable to have completed the first two terms of Writing for children as you will now have the opportunity to put into practice some of the topics covered in the first two terms. If you haven't completed the first two terms, you
should have had some experience of a creative writing course (such as Ways into creative writing) and/or have been writing for children on your own.
- Group discussion
- Feedback on individual writing
- Class writing exercises
- Tutor input illustrated by examples from published works
The Tutor
Lou Kuenzler attended the Writing for Children class at the City Lit 2002 - 2003, then moved onto the Writing Workshop the following year. Her first book for children, The Ugly Egg, a story for new and emerging readers, was published by Kingfisher in 2009. Since then, Lou has had a range of other titles commissioned. She has written stories, plays, and rhymes for young readers. Most recently, Lou has been asked by Orchard to produce a series of eight silly rhyme books based on Aesop’s fables.
City lit reserves the right to change course tutors or venues from those advertised in this outline. In line with our refund policy we are unable to grant a refund on the grounds of a change of tutor/venue.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
