This fun one-day course taught by an experienced film and TV screenwriter will look at how big screen comedy, TV sitcom and 'Dramady' (comedy drama) are created. There will also be comedy sketches and jokes, script analysis and screenings of film and TV clips.

Course outline

What is the course about?

This course covers writing comedy for TV and film.

What topics will we cover?

Creating jokes, writing comedy sketches, sitcom, ‘dramady’ and big screen comedy.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Start to create jokes and comedy sketches, and have a grasp of what makes screen comedy work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course will suit all levels. No particular skills are required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?


The Tutor
Phil O’Shea is an established Film and TV screenwriter. Phil has written for many TV shows and worked on the Sky TV soap Dream Team, and was lead writer on the teen soap “Risk”. He has won the UK Film Council £10,000 ”25 words or less” writing prize and has won awards for his films at film festivals around the world. Phil also lectures at a number of universities on film and TV scriptwriting.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
