The course will explore a range of alternative cinemas such as surrealism, the avant-garde, art cinema and early ‘primitive’ silent cinema. It will consider their place in film history and culture, and their interaction with mainstream cinema.
The course will deal with film styles such of surrealism, the avant-garde, the art film and early ‘primitive’ silent cinema. We will look at how they are organised in opposition to the dominant ‘classical’ style and the ways in which they interact with or inform classical film style. We will also study the history and theory of these ‘alternative’ film styles.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the history and theory of alternative cinema.
- Identify key filmmakers and innovators in alternative cinema.
- Identify and evaluate key films in alternative cinema.
- Identify a range of key terms, themes and issues in film studies.
The course is suitable for all levels. It will provide an introduction to the subject but will also be useful for those wishing to build on previous study in this area.
Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, handouts, group discussion, group work, articles, reviews and other course-related materials.
Students should bring pens and paper but the tutor will provide all other materials.
