Course outline

What is the course about?

The course provides an introduction to film studies. It offers students the chance to explore the key areas of film and to develop a critical understanding of the medium.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover the elements of a film (framing, editing, camera movement, sound), film style (e.g., Hollywood, art cinema, early cinema), critical/theoretical approaches to film (e.g. genre, spectatorship, authorship, national cinema), movements in cinema, the film industry, and film history.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- analyse films within a critical framework
- identify the key elements of filmmaking
- identify and evaluate a range of key terms and themes in film studies
- identify significant periods and movements in film history
- demonstrate an understanding of a range of critical and theoretical approaches to film.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for all levels. It will provide an introduction to the subject but will also be useful for those wishing to build on previous study in this area. You do not need any particular skills but the course will involve some reading.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, handouts, group discussion, group work, articles, reviews and other course-related materials.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students will require pens and paper but the tutor will provide all other materials.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
