The course provides an introduction to film studies. It offers students the chance to explore the key areas of film and to develop a critical understanding of the medium.
The course will cover the elements of a film (framing, editing, camera movement, sound), film style (e.g., Hollywood, art cinema, early cinema), critical/theoretical approaches to film (e.g. genre,spectatorship, authorship, national cinema), movements in cinema, the film industry, and film history.
- Analyse films within a critical framework.
- Identify the key elements of filmmaking.
- Identify and evaluate a range of key terms and themes in film studies.
- Identify significant periods and movements in film history.
- Demonstrate an understanding of a range of critical and theoretical approaches to film.
The course is suitable for all levels. It will provide an introduction to the subject but will also be useful for those wishing to build on previous study in this area. You do not need any particular skills but the course will involve some reading.
Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, handouts, group discussion, group work, articles, reviews and other course-related materials.
Students will require pens and paper but the tutor will provide all other materials.
