Course outline

What is the course about?

What is arthouse? Last Year at Marienbad was the film that defined “arthouse” for a generation but now a wave of stunning new films of art and beauty has appeared with ripples from the new waves which swept the world in the sixties. After documenting the original ‘new waves’, we will view and discuss Archipelago, I Am Love, A Separation,Uncle Boonme, Le Quattro Volte, In the City of Sylvia and many others.

What topics will we cover?

The differences, in style and content, between arthouse and multiplex films.
How could you interest a member of the mass audience in seeing an arthouse film as it sounds too demanding, exclusive or intellectual to many?

By the end of this course you should be able to:

compile a list of key new wave films
discuss and analyse recent arthouse films
list conventions of mainstream genre films
debate whether arthouse films have their own conventions or are individual art works.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

From absolute beginners to advanced artists, all learners will have an opportunity to listen, discuss, and even choose and introduce their own clips.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lecture, screening, interviews, discussions, student introductions to clips, tutor’s artful Re-Mixes to stimulate discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No, though you will be invited to bring your own clips.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
