What is the course about?

This course is about as topical and up-to-date as it gets, reviewing and criticising current releases as well as a range of contemporary cinema from the last few years. Trend-spotting at the Sundance Film Festival is followed by this years BAFTA and Oscar contenders. The course will illustrate new developments in creative, artistic use of the language of cinema, whether mainstream or independent. Social events and optional visits to the cinema at reduced prices.

What topics will we cover?

To what extent does international, independent or mainstream cinema mirror social and cultural concerns?

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Analyse new trends in cinema and understand the film industry.
- Use appropriate film terminology.
- Read a film and identify the key elements of film style.
- Discuss and analyse films in informed and informal new ways.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels welcome. This is a study of film for todays more knowledgeable general audience. Several social gatherings will offer further chances to network and to compare notes and knowledge.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Screenings, lectures, discussions, interviews, surprise events. The primary learning tool is the tutors Re-Mix, a compilation of clips edited from a range of films in such a way as to form a lateral-viewing and to focus discussion. Students will be able to make use of newspaper reviews, TV and radio shows about the cinema, internet trailers and podcasts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a pen and paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
