This is a course for those seeking an alternative to the multiplex dominated by large distributors who wish to venture into new cinematic experiences. It is a bold experiment at the BFI southbank to choose and analyse a series of films from the various BFI seasons. Learners will decide what to see then form a kind of weekly “Review Show” panel to decide which tools or theories to use in analysing this diverse and broad selection of films. The BFI shows the broadest range of films (daily) in the UK but does not have a forum to put them in context. This course could become that forum on a more permanent basis.
Review show panel to introduce the film of the week
Behind-the-scenes at the BFI: cultural programming, education department, drafting programme notes etc.
analyse and compare the work of at least two distinct directors
discuss the ‘auteur theory’ and attach it to an artist of personal style with distinct themes and trademarks
place and arrange films of different eras and national cinemas
list key works associated with each film of the week.
All levels, a mirror of the cinema-going audience. You will gain the ability to see clearly.
Tutor’s opening lecture and compilation re-mix to establish a distinct context. Group discussion, Q&A with tutor and guest lecturers, weekly panel presentation of a particular film.
Most films we choose are available on dvd or other formats but as part of current seasons they will be screened at the BFI southbank. On Tuesdays, all films are a fiver. We may possibly ararnge group discounts.
