The course explores a range of horror, science fiction and fantasy films from Hollywood, Britain, and European and world cinemas. It will consider the development of these genres from the earliest days of cinema to the present.
Genre; film history; film style; film movements; film theory (e.g., spectatorship and audiences); technological developments.
Demonstrate an understanding of how these genres have evolved.
Identify the characteristics and functions of these genres.
Evaluate a range of critical approaches to film.
The course is suitable for all levels. It will provide an introduction to the subject but will also be useful for those wishing to build on previous study in this area. You do not need any particular skills but the course will involve some reading.
Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, handouts, whole group and small group discussions, articles, reviews and other course-related materials.
Students will require pen and paper but the tutor will provide all other materials.
