Course outline

What is the course about?

Gaining a critical overview of the modes of documentary presentation and some of the ideas which underpin them.
Developing useful technical and analytical skills to decode the images of the world presented in documentary film and television.
Providing insights into the professional world of documentary filmmaking.

What topics will we cover?

- Important moments in the history of documentary – the British documentary movement, direct cinema, cinema verite
- Television and factual programming
- Alternative documentary forms.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify and analyse some ideas about fact and fiction, realism and ideology in documentary film
- Identify different documentary strategies and styles and the historical factors that played a part in their development
- Identify ethical issues around documentary and some practical responses to them.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course that caters for all levels. It will be interesting and useful for people with a general or academic interest in documentary as well as those already working in film or TV making and those considering entering such work.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lecture, screenings and individual and group discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students require pen and paper but the tutor will provide all other materials.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
