Course outline

What is the course about?

The backstory of Hollywood as the home of the motion picture industry and the centre of production of an art and an audience. We will trace the development of various studios and how they evolved a perfect system.

What topics will we cover?

View and discuss documentaries on various Hollywood studios
outline their various core strategies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

list the major studios and differentiate their unique styles (USP)
list the major directors of each studio and their key films
list the major stars of each studio and the genre associated with them
discuss how these elements worked towards the central system
discuss whether a Hollywood studio system could produce art.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

from entry level to advanced, learners will achieve by interacting in discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lecture, screening, discussion, learners’ introductions to clips, tutor’s Re-Mix to stimulate discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a pen and paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
