The course traces Polanski’s career from its beginnings to the present day and considers its position in the avant-garde and art cinema movements of the 1950s and 1960s, Hollywood cinema of the 1960s and 1970s, and contemporary popular cinema. In doing so, it will consider issues of continuity of style and theme in Polanski’s work.
Authorship (e.g., Polanski’s status as a film ‘auteur’); film style; film history; film movements; film theory; genre.

Evaluate Polanski’s approach to style and theme.
Evaluate a range of critical approaches to film.
The course is suitable for all levels. It will provide an introduction to the subject but will also be useful for those wishing to build on previous study in this area. You do not need any particular skills but the course will involve some reading.
Screenings of extracts from films, talks by the tutor, handouts, whole group and small group discussions, articles, reviews and other course-related materials.
Students will require pens and paper but the tutor will provide all other materials.
