The course explores examples of Haydn`s work in the context of the Holy Roman Empire which provided him with his most important patrons. The extraordinary structure of the Empire (described as `neither Holy Roman nor an Empire`) allowed composers to find new aristocratic patrons when others proved unwilling or unable to continue their support.
We will explore some key works composed by Haydn for his aristocratic patrons
The structure of the unique empire in which Haydn and his patrons operated
The privileged lives of some of these rulers and aristocrats.
Demonstrate an understanding of the formal, melodic and harmonic characteristics of important examples of Haydn`s work
Identify key elements of the Holy Roman Empire
Discuss the significance of Haydn`s aristocratic patrons for his music.
