The Greek poet Simonides famously observed that ‘painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.’ Our enjoyment of classical art is greatly enhanced when viewed in the context of contemporary literature.
Readings from the works of classical authors will be explored along with viewings of art images from the period. This juxtaposition will increase our understanding of both. Vase paintings, wall paintings, sculptures and mosaics will accompany the poetry of Homer, Sappho, Virgil and many others.
- Recognise the style and context of art images and texts of the classical period.
- Learn some of the relationships between classical art and literature.
- Use appropriate evidence and strategies for analysing this ancient material.
The course is an introduction to the subject and can be taken with no previous knowledge. An awareness of lack of consensus and willingness to explore alternative explanations and values is important.
Illustrated lectures, discussions, a museum visit, questions, readings and analysis of original texts (in translation). Museum visits and reading outside the course will greatly enhance the experience.
Limited book purchases will be recommended but are optional. Bring a pen and paper.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
