The aim of the course is to provide a guide to the music of St Petersburg in the 19th century.
The course will, by focusing on individual composers who lived and worked in St Petersburg in the 19th century show the intimate relationship that developed between the city and its music.
explain the importance of key musical venues in the city and the works performed there
identify the most significant composers and the works they produced in and for the city
identify key aspects of the historical and social background to the city.
This is an `introductory` course and does not assume any previous study or reading although you will need a reasonable standard of English to keep up with the course. You will gain more from the course, in terms of enjoyment and learning, if you listen to examples of music from the period between the sessions and are able and willing to do some supplementary reading. As with most of our courses, an enquiring mind is more important than specific levels of skills.
