This course is a general survey of U.S. history from 1877 to the present. The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of the major issues, events, and personalities that have shaped early American and United States history. We will use primary documents and a variety of materials to learn about the topic.
The topics covered in this course broadly include, immigration, the Industrial Revolution, Jim Crow, World War I, Depression and the New Deal, World War II, the 1960s, and the contemporary period.
Identify key events and developments in U.S. history of the period
Contrast the role and contributions of some major figures
Outline the structure of government in the U.S.
Discuss some arguments and explanations concerning elements of change and continuity in U.S.history
Describe the part played in different periods by `the people`.
This is an `introductory` course and does not assume any previous study or reading although you will need a good grasp of English to keep up with the course. As with most of our history and current affairs courses, an open mind and a willingness to listen to and think about new ideas are more important than specific levels of skills.
The class will be delivered through a presentation, accompanied by PowerPoint slides. We will use a variety maps, images, video and text throughout the sessions. Discussion of materials will be encouraged.
A list of recommended reading material and recommended films will be provided, but this is optional. Please bring pen and paper.
