Current polical, economic and social developments in selected Latin American countries.
Students can select from the following topics, as well as propose some during the first week:
- the commodity trade
- land ownership
- industrialisation, the debt Crisis, and neo-liberalism
- migration and life in the city
- the environment
- the state and politics
- the military
- the left, guerrillas and social movements
- indigenous people
- the church.
- identify key actors in a selection of countries.
- analyse and discuss constructively the key political, social and economic issues that affect some Latin American countries, such as:
- challenges to democratisation
- the impact of neo-liberalism
- the causes of under development
- the link between economic policies and environmental degradation.
No specific knowledge needed, although some background on Latin America would be helpful.
The course will be a combination of lectures, group discussions and presentations. Resources will be available on the course’s website to prepare each session. Each session will be supported by PowerPoint presentations and handouts.
