Latin American society, history, culture and politics, analysed through case studies.
The course will offer the possibility of in-depth analysis on some of the following issues:
- The democratisation of Mexico
- Free trade in Mexico and Central America
- Guatemala : a good place to kill
- Nicaragua from the Sandinistas to CAFTA
- The Cuban Revolution
- Democracy, guerrillas and drugs in Colombia
- Oil and politics in Venezuela
- Human rights in Peru
- Indigenous movements and resistance to neo-liberalism in Bolivia
- Argentina : on the road to recovery?
- Women and politics in Latin America
- Literature, identity and politics
Following an introductory session, students can choose among the different topics for the next 10 sessions. Please e-mail your choice or suggestions for new topics to: s_ardouin1971@yahoo.co.uk

For students who have some background knowledge about Latin America.
A good standard of English is required.
The course will be a combination of lectures and discussions in small and large groups. Handouts will be available for each session. When appropriate, there will be videos and slides.
Please bring a pen and paper.
Books will be recommended but students are not required to purchase them if they do not wish.
This is not an exam course.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Class discussions will give students an opportunity to assess their progress. There will also be opportunities for students to discuss their progress with the tutor, should they wish to do so.
