Explore a variety of 18th century writing by Swift, Pope, Dr Johnson and newly discovered women writers, among others.
Satire in verse and prose, journalism, working class poetry, reflective poetry and fictional experiments.
- Identify the works of different 18th century writers.
- Recognise the particular character and achievement of 18th century literature.
The level of the course is introductory. No previous knowledge or experience of Literature is necessary. However, learners will, ideally, need the following skills and attributes:
An enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of texts in large and small groups.
An interest in, and ability to listen to, the responses of other students to the work discussed.
Reading and group discussion.
Bring a pen and paper. Photocopies and handouts will be provided.
