Very lively debates on views of books read, while at the same time respecting each others' possibly differing views.

I was disappointed in this course which took mainly American literature when we were promised novels in English 1960.One novel was Russian in translation from the late 1930s.Two were english and 5 American. None from other nationals, a very slanted approach. Although the class was permitted a vote it seemed very much slanted in favour of what the lecturer wanted and had already covered elsewhere.

The tutor is an engaging and talented teacher who combines skilled facilitation of discussion - all sudents have participated no matter how shy - with detailed appraisal and analysis of the text drawing on her own skills as a writer and her broad knowledge of contemporary writers. The classes are engaging and great fun and not least because our tutor has a deep love of literature and has generated real excitement about the texts we have studied. I have consequently learned to look at novels in a completely different way and can now think in terms of structure, method and prose quality in a way that I did not dream of before. I would recommend the class to anyone who likes novels but wishes to learn to love them.
