You will explore 3 novels in terms of context, language, imagery and motifs: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley ,'Confessions of a justified Sinner' by James Hogg ,'Dracula' by Bram Stoker.
We will study the texts in their cultural context and look in detail at their techniques of writing, their language, imagery and motifs.
- discuss the work of these 19th century novelists.
- identify the interests and concerns informing their fiction.
- recognise the social and historical framework for their texts.
- recognise the effects of their use of imagery, language and motifs.
You will need an enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of texts in large and small groups. You will be willing and able to do some reading and preparation outside the class. You will be interested in listening to, and learning from, the responses of other students to the work discussed. You will have a commitment to developing your analytical skills.
Group discussions and readings. Work outside the class will concentrate on week-by-week preparatory
readings of the text.
You will need to purchase a copy of the texts - Dracula (edition to be announced) Frankenstein (edition to be announced) and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (edition to be announced).

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitiored by your tutor taking into account class work and homework where appropriate .The tutor will record your progress and provide informal, regular feedback throughout the course. At the end of your course you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment which will be formally recorded on a standard form (the Statement of Learning).
