Three Shakespeare's and a Marlowe

Marlowe's Edward II helped shape the English history play and was a major influence on Shakespeare's Richard II. Both plays have tragic elements and will be followed in the second term by two Roman tragedies, Antony and Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus.

Course outline

What is the course about?

The plays Edward II by Marlowe , Richard II, Antony and Cleopatra and Titus Andronicus by Shakespeare will be studied. Close attention will be paid to genre, in particular where the History and Tragedy genre overlap. Close attention will be paid to structure, language and imagery in a quest for meaning.

What topics will we cover?

- The Plays will be studied in terms of genre,theme structure,language and imagery.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- discuss the role of genre in your interpretation of Shakespeare’s plays
- discuss key themes in individual plays
- analyse language and imagery with greater confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need an enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of texts in large and small groups. You will be willing and able to do some reading and preparation outside the class. You will be interested in listening to, and learning from, the responses of other students to the work discussed. You will have a commitment to developing your analytical skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

All 4 plays will be read aloud in class in their entirey. Everyone will be encouraged to participate. Each scene will be discussed as we proceed and these discussions will be conducted as seminars. You will be required to do some reading and preparation in advance of the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is recommended that you equip yourself with the Arden editions of all Shakespeare plays to be studied. The New Mermaid edition will be needed for Edward II
Please bring a pen and paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
