What is the course about?

You will read and discuss three plays:The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Hamlet by Shakespeare and a play in production in London.You will look at structure,characterisation, language and how they work as performance texts.
You will learn about the social and political background of the plays.

What topics will we cover?

The plays will be read and discussed in terms of dramatic structure, characterisation, theme and their effectiveness as performance texts.The social and political background of both plays will be studied.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- read and discuss plays in terms of literary and performance texts
- extend your knowledge of dramatic text
- identify key aspects in the work of the selected writers.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The level of the course is introductory. No previous knowledge or experience of Literature is necessary. However, learners will, ideally, have the following skills and attributes:
An enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of texts in large and small groups.
A willingness and ability to do some reading and preparation outside the class.
An interest in, and ability to listen to, the responses of other students to the work discussed.
A commitment to acquiring and developing ways of understanding how the writer uses language to achieve effect.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used.
Large and small group discussions, video and readings.
You will be expected to do some reading at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to purchase the texts:
Hamlet by Shakespeare ( New Swan edition Advanced series .) The Crucible by Miller (Penguin edition)
Possibly a theatre ticket (group rate)
Please bring pen and paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
