Course outline

What is the course about?

The course builds on the analytical skills developed in the first two terms. You will read and discuss a novel, 'Emma' by Jane Austen, a play 'Hedda Gabler 'by Ibsen and a selection of poetry by Ted Hughes.

What topics will we cover?

You will read and discuss 'Emma' by Jane Austen,'Hedda Gabler' by Ibsen and a selection of poetry by Ted Hughes. You will consolidate your analytical skills and be able to identify and appreciate the writer's intentions and method.. You will also learn about the social, historical and political background in which the texts were created.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Apply an analytical approach to your reading.
- Understand the ways in which different literary genres explore emotions and ideas.
- Identify key aspects in the work of selected writers.
Appreciate the influence of social,autobiographical and historical on the texts studied.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The level of the course is introductory. No previous knowledge or experience of Literature is necessary. However, learners will, ideally, need the following skills and attributes:
An enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of texts in large and small groups.
A willingness and ability to do some reading and preparation outside the class.
An interest in, and ability to listen to, the responses of other students to the work discussed.
A commitment to acquiring and developing ways of understanding how the writer uses language to achieve effect.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A variety of teaching methods will be used - large and small group discussions, DVD, video, cassette and readings from texts.

'Emma' by Jane Austen Penguin Classics edition
Hedda Gabler' by Ibsen (Methuen student edition))
Poetry will be provided
Please bring a pen and paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
