Course outline

What is the course about?

You will be looking at aspects of Wren's London.

What topics will we cover?

You will look at the two major events of London in the seventeenth century, the Great Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of 1666. You will be shown how these two disasters gave way to many opportunities for new city churches and buildings. You will explore Wrens role in this as Surveyor of the Royal Works. There will be an afternoon visit to St Pauls Cathedral.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Identify key landmarks designed by Wren
- Summarise the key events that occurred in London in the seventeenth century.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone who is interested in London history and is able to undertake a moderately paced walking tour.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Morning lecture with slides and a site visit. There will be a reading list and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will be an entrance fee to St Pauls Cathedral.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback throughout the day.
