This course of slide-illustrated talks and three guided walks seeks out the unusual and off-the-beaten-track oddities of London. We will discuss an assortment of eccentric characters and some of London's little known customs and practices - past and present. Initial lecture held at City Lit.

Course outline

What is the course about?

The off-the-beaten-track oddities of London, past and present.

What topics will we cover?

Ancient observances and anomalous ritual, residual elements of historic buildings, ghost sightings, quirky statues, execution places, eccentric events of the past etc.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Know your way round some of the capitals back alleys.
- Recount a fund of interesting information about the metropolis.
- Have a wider appreciation of the personality of Londoners, now and in the past.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone who is interested in London history and is able to undertake moderately paced. walking tours.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Using slide-illustrated talks, discussion and three guided walks.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Student learning will be assessed through discussion and by question and answer. There will be informal opportunities for students to discuss their progress.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
