Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn about the history and design of the river bridges between Tower Bridge and Battersea. No other city has such a variety of bridges as London, and you will wonder at the ingenuity that went into their construction from the 13th century Old London Bridge to the 21st century Millennium Bridge.

What topics will we cover?

The history, design, and fate of these bridges.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Name the designers of three of the bridges
Give the rough dates of the main versions of London Bridge
Explain why it took so long to build a second bridge over the Thames in central London.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No specific skills needed – just a general interest in London and the ability to undertake a two hour walking tour taken at a moderate pace.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will have a guided walk along the Thames from Tower Bridge to Battersea.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
