Off the beaten track in London

This series of walks takes us to more of London's lesser known districts away from the usual tourist trail. Areas discovered will include Battersea, Forest Hill, Blackheath, Dalston, Woolwich, Deptford, Hackney, Stoke Newington and Islington. N.B Initial lecture held at City Lit followed by 9 walks.

Course outline

What is the course about?

The history, topography and development of a variety of London districts.

What topics will we cover?

History, growth and regeneration of London. Architecture, famous inhabitants, riverside history, the arts, industry.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify buildings and point out places of interest in the areas visited.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No specific skills needed – just a general interest in London and the ability to undertake a two hour walking tour taken at a moderate pace.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

One lecture, guided tours, handouts, discussion. No work outside the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No costs. Wear comfortable walking shoes, warm enough clothes and bring an umbrella!

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
