Course outline

What is the course about?

You will look at the devolution of supreme political authority from the monarch to Parliament. Also, Parliament itself, how it is made up, the creation of a Prime Minister and Downing Street, the State Opening, the great officers of State. You will also look at Whitehall and the Party Headquarters. You will analyse the forces that shaped London's political stage: the personalities (you'll see their portraits in the NPG), the radicals and the scandals. We'll also talk about the Suffragettes and other Westminster women.

What topics will we cover?

An introductory lecture covering the scope of the course and setting expectations etc.
There will be visits to:

- Parliament
- The National Portrait Gallery
- The Karl Marx Memorial Library.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- analyse the forces that have shaped London (as capital city) and its politics
- describe in more detail how Parliament works
- identify politically significant buildings, statues, landmarks etc. in London.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone who is interested in London's political history and is able to undertake a moderately paced two and a half hour walking tour.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In the form of lecture, guided walks and visits.
The tutor will also set a short quizz (having explained sources of information in the introductory lecture); and possibly short projects for groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will also be additional costs for entry to the Banqueting House and Karl Marx Memorial Library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Tutor feedback, recaps and the completion of short talks.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
