Course outline

What is the course about?

This course examines the history of the City of London, by looking at its architecture and famous citizens.

What topics will we cover?

City traditions and ceremonies; Guildhall area; the East of the City; Legal London; North of Fleet Street; Women in the City; Blackfriars area; Barbican area; Broadgate area; the Financial City; North of Moorgate.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Outline the history of the City of London from the time of the Romans to today's financial capital
- Discuss the importance of the City's outstanding inhabitants eg Dick Whittington, Samuel Pepys, Sir Christopher Wren
- Identify the major monuments, landmarks and important buildings of the City, and be able to describe their functions
- Become sufficiently familiar with the City to be able to take your friends and relations on a tour.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The second term is a continuation of the first, but new students are welcome. Suitable for anyone who is interested in London history and is able to undertake a moderately paced two hour walking tour.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

One lecture each term with slides, group discussions, walks and site visits.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will be some extra costs for entrance fees.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
