This course examines the history of the City of London, by looking at its architecture and famous citizens.
- Roman London
- monasteries, nunneries and friaries
- Livery companies

- the American City
- City Churchyards

- outline the history of the City of London from the time of the Romans to today's financial capital
- discuss the importance of the City's outstanding inhabitants eg Dick Whittington, Samuel Pepys, Sir Christopher Wren
- identify the major monuments, landmarks and important buildings of the City, and be able to describe their functions
- become sufficiently familiar with the City to be able to take your friends and relations on a tour.
Suitable for anyone who is interested in London history and is able to undertake a moderately paced two hour walking tour. The second term is a continuation of the first, but new students are welcome.
One lecture each term with slides, group discussions, walks and site visits.
