Course outline

What is the course about?

Life coaching is an increasingly popular way of helping people achieve their goals and lead the life they would like. This course focuses on the ways that philosophers and philosophical ideas and methods can make life coaching more effective.

What topics will we cover?

- introduction to life coaching.
- introduction to practical philosophy.
- specific philosophers and philosophical methods that can be used in philosophical life coaching.
The life goals that will be covered will include:
- clarifying your values
- being happier
- making wiser decisions
- and finding more meaning to life.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- identify some of the goals and methods of life coaching
- identify some philosophical ideas and methods of use in life coaching
- apply some of the ideas learnt today.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is introductory and presupposes no prior knowledge. It will appeal to those interested in philosophy and personal development and also life coaches wishing to extend their skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Students will examine arguments by a combination of group or pair activity, lively class discussion and short talks. Participation is required in many exercises but is entirely voluntary in the case of whole class discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Photocopied handouts will be given out and further reading recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
