Course outline

What is the course about?

Run in partnership with the PR Academy, this three-day course accredited by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed in PR as well as a platform for further studies.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be awarded the (level 3) Foundation Award in Public Relations awarded by the Chartered Institute for Public Relations.

What topics will we cover?

- The basic theories, scope and practical skills of PR, through case studies and current issues.
- How PR fits in with marketing, advertising, publicity and propaganda.
- A look at specialist areas – lobbying, marketing PR, sponsorship, working in-house or in a consultancy, corporate social responsibility, relationship building, reputation management and working with different publics.
- How to write and place a news release.
- Knowing what is news and why it needs currency and human interest.
- What makes a good picture for print, the right sound for radio and when something might be of interest to television.
- Working under the CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations) code of practice.
- A three-hour examination involving a report, a news release exercise and an essay.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand and differentiate between the concepts and practices of: public relations, marketing, advertising, publicity, public information, spin and propaganda.
- Understand and work with key PR terms: publics, reputation, relationships, media relations, newsworthy, dialogue, mutual understanding, social responsibility, evaluation and communication.
- Understand and know how to work under the CIPR code of ethics.
- Understand when and how to write and place a news release.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is ideal for individuals who work in organisations with PR colleagues, or in junior roles who want to increase their understanding of PR policies and practice. It is also suitable for those interested in embarking on a career in PR and for those who have responsibility for or liaison with PR as part of a broader job focus.

Participants are expected to have:
- English, spoken and written, to International Language Testing System (IELTS) band score of 7.0 or above or equivalent.
- Education to at least A-level or equivalent qualification or work experience.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Fifteen hours of lectures and participative workshops during which the background, some basic theories and practical skills of PR will be explained and demonstrated using case studies and current issues. Course dates are XXX. Students will then be assessed in a three hour examination involving a report, a news release exercise and an essay. The online examination takes place on XXX.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Those achieving a pass or above grade in the introductory certificate are qualified to enter for the CIPR Advanced Certificate in Public Relations. Details of further CIPR accredited qualifications can be found on the PR Academy’s website at www.pracademy.co.uk.
