Course outline

What is the course about?

While this course is a continuation on ‘A brief history of Christianity, part 1’, new students are very welcome. It will focus on the development of Christianity from the Reformation to the present day.

What topics will we cover?

The course will look at the origins of the Reformation and consider key theologians of that time, including Luther and Calvin. We will consider the legacy of the Reformation and how it has influenced ideas on the sacraments. We look at the Enlightenment and Romanticism and consider rivals to Christianity such as Marxism. We ask why there are so many different denominations and look at recent developments including the challenges of liberation theology and feminism.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify key concepts in the development of Christianity since the Reformation.
Describe how these concepts relate to present day issues in Christian doctrine.
Critically assess the influences which have shaped Christianity today.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course requires no previous knowledge, and will be accessible to anyone who has an interest in Christianity. You do not need to be a Christian, or belong to any faith group. You do need to have an open mind and be willing to respect the beliefs of others.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be delivered by weekly seminars, which will include lecturing and class discussion. Handouts summarising the key points and suggesting further reading will be provided each session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no set texts or required materials.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Another course in the Religious studies section e.g. Christianity in the modern world.
