The course aims to equip you with the skills to converse in everyday situations using Arabic and to communicate in writing in a variety of situations. Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken form close to it are used in the class. Reference will be made to the major colloquial varieties, when relevant.
Based on Al-Kitaab and the tutor's own material, the course has a strong emphasis on communication skills using mainly Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken variety close to it. Topics include: Arabic extended family and friends, nationalities and countries, work and professional life, languages, newspaper introductions corner, living and studying abroad, cultural knowledge.
Grammar: gender and number, past and present tense of regular and some irregular verbs, negatives, direct object pronouns, genitive pronouns, nominal and verbal sentences, the Idafa, interrogatives, adverbs of time and frequency, comparative and superlatives.

-give and ask for personal information
-understand and use familiar everyday expressions and high frequency vocabulary
-discuss jobs, tasks, specializations
-express preferences/likes/dislikes
-learn about Arabic everyday life and culture
-participate in straightforward social conversations
-write simple texts, e.g. a letter or a description of events
-develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.
Students should have completed Stage 1 or have studied Arabic for about a year. Students should have covered the tenses and be familiar with the conjugation of verbs. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
