Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to equip you with the skills to converse in everyday situations using Arabic and to communicate in writing in a variety of situations. Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken form close to it are used in the class. Reference will be made to the major colloquial varieties, when relevant.

What topics will we cover?

Based on Al-Kitaab and the tutor's own material, the course has a strong emphasis on communication skills using mainly Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken variety close to it. Topics include: living abroad, the weather, daily routine, cities, mental and physical states, adverts, studying at university.

Grammar: Adverbs of time and place, the Idafa, past and present tense of regular and some irregular verbs, noun adjective agreement, nominal and verbal sentences, plurals, al-Masdar, interrogatives.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-describe and compare people, places, objects and situations

-ask for information and speak about professional life

-talk about/express feelings, opinions and emotions

-write simple texts, e.g. a letter or a description of events/places/people

-ask questions in a formal/informal way

-give reasons

-talk about the past and present

-understand Arabic everyday life and culture

-participate in straightforward social conversations

-develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course offers progression from stage 2:lower module 1. Students should have studied Arabic for more than a year. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Course textbook: Al-Kitaab, Part 1, by Al-Batal, M. and Brustad, K., 2nd Edition, Georgetown University Press. Chapters 4-5-6. Additional materials will be provided by the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
