The course aims to equip the students with the skills to converse in everyday situations using Arabic and to communicate in writing in a variety of situations. Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken form close to it are used in the class. Reference will be made to the major colloquial varieties, when relevant.
Based on Al-Kitaab, the course has strong emphasis on communication skills using mainly Modern St.andard Arabic and the spoken variety close to it. Topics include: education in the Arab World, hobbies, currencies, Arabic food, the weather, the diary, daily routine and activities.
Grammar: interrogatives, liana, al-Masdar, attached genitive pronouns, prepositions and attached pronouns, fronted predicate, plurals, kaana, adverbs, past and present tense of regular and some irregular verb.

-talk about/express feelings, opinions and emotions
-write simple texts, e.g. a letter or a description of events/places/people
-asking questions in a formal/informal way
-know about various Arabic currencies

-order food in a restaurant

-understand Arabic everyday life and culture
-participate in straightforward social conversations
-develop strategies for coping with unfamiliar language or unexpected responses, such as asking for repetition or clarification.
This course offers progression from stage 2:lower module 2. Students should have studied Arabic for a year and a half. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).
A variety of methods will be used: communicative approach, demonstrations, role-play, pair and group work, audio-visual aids, practical assignments and tasks.
