Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to build on the language and skills that you have acquired in the previous three years and to extend your range of vocabulary and communicative competence. It also aims to consolidate your reading and writing of Chinese characters.

What topics will we cover?

Contents: actions related to direction; personal interests related to daily life such as hobbies, health and traditional food, likes and dislikes.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Follow directions
-Pass on a message.
-Talk about your hobbies: the books you like to read, the style clothes you like, etc.
-Talk about the food you like and dislike.
-Recognise 120 new characters.
-Use different sentence patterns within spoken and written forms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you have completed Chinese 3 module 1 or have an equivalent intermediate level of Chinese. A working knowledge of 400-500 characters would be an advantage.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Materials used in class are provided by the tutor. You will not be working with a particular textbook. However, you can purchase the following course book for self-study: Chinese in Steps. (3)
This book can be bought in: Grant and Cutler - www.grantandcutler.com (020 7734 2012).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
