The course aims to:
- build on the skills/languages acquired in levels 1 and 2
- extend range of spoken vocabulary and written characters
- increase communicative competence and familiarize students with variations of voice/accent (male and female).
A wide range of audio-visual/written material is employed to develop and reinforce students
use of Chinese language.

- express opinions and offer explanations
- describe situations and narrate a sequence of events
- enlarge active vocabulary and character recognition to approximately 800 characters.
Students will need to have attended level 2: upper: module 1 or have an equivalent intermediate level of Chinese.
A working knowledge of 400-500 characters would be an advantage. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to understand basic spoken and written information in English (e.g. simple instructions, course documents) and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc).
Communicative/direct method approach with emphasis on speaking and listening skills. methods include
question and answer, pair practice, group and whole class work, role play. Use of audio-visual materials and
cassettes. Please note students are expected to participate in classroom activities.
All materials are provided by the tutor. Students do not work through set texts or specific textbooks.
