Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to enable students to read straightforward Greek prose by gaining a knowledge of basic grammatical structures.

What topics will we cover?

We shall be using the textbook Reading Greek (2nd edition, 2 vols), a textbook designed for adult beginners, based on original Greek sources. Students will read adapted passages from works by Thucydides, Aristophanes etc. We shall start at around section 4A - check with the tutor through the Languages Department for the exact point to start at. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We shall be studying the conjugation of verbs, the declension of nouns and adjectives, pronouns, imperfect, future, and aorist tenses.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-demonstrate some knowledge of the structure of Greek
-demonstrate some knowledge of the conjugation of verbs
-demonstrate some knowledge of the declension of nouns and adjectives.
-demonstrate some knowledge of pronouns
-demonstrate some knowledge of imperfect tense
-demonstrate some knowledge of future tense
-demonstrate some knowledge of aorist tense
-have some insight into the derivation of English words.
-have some insight into the world of ancient Greece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for beginners who have already completed Classical Greek 1: Module 1 and Module 2, or who have equivalent experience. The course is also suitable for those who want to go on to read New Testament Greek. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Reading Greek by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (2nd edition, CUP, 2 vols). Some copies are available in the Learning centre for use during this course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
