Course outline

What is the course about?

The course enables you to learn the most basic features (grammar and vocabulary) of the Greek language whilst reading an enjoyable Greek text.

What topics will we cover?

The course will aim to cover units 3-4 of Reading Greek, a textbook designed for adult beginners, based on original Greek sources. Over the year, you will read adapted and simplified passages of Classical Greek authors including Aristophanes, Herodotus and Plato.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-show a greater working knowledge of Greek grammar
-understand basic Greek vocabulary
-have an appreciation of Greek mythology.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you have completed Foundation Classical Greek: Module 1, or have equivalent experience of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Reading Greek by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (CUP) 2 vols.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be some written homework, which will be marked by the tutor, and final examination, however most exercises will be marked in class by students themselves.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
