This is an intensive course for beginners who have already completed Foundation Latin: Module 1. You will build up vocabulary and grammatical knowledge partly through memorising and partly through reading Latin literature, particularly comic plays by Plautus. You are encouraged but not obliged to take an exam at the end of module 3 of the course.
Reading, translation and exercises based on Plautus's plays.
Study of grammar.
Practice of vocabulary and grammar learnt through writing and speaking Latin.
-develop and understanding of the difference between accidence (word ending) and syntax (construction of sentences)
-develop a sense of Latin derivations and how English has been enriched by vocabulary from Latin
-have a fairly clear idea of the outline of Roman history.
This course is suitable if you have completed Latin 1 module1 or are a rusty Latinist. You should be ready to participate in group learning and be willing to discuss both English and Latin grammar. Time for homework is essential as is regular attendance. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
Between two and three hours' homework a week is essential.
In class: translating aloud and in pairs; vocabulary and grammar tests or competitions; some drama and
conversation; teacher's explanations of grammar; student presentations.
Text book: Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (2 vols), published by Cambridge University Press; ISBN: 0521286239 and 0521286220.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be an exam at the end of the all three modules of Latin 1.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
