Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to introduce you to the language or remind you of what you have forgotten if you are rusty.

What topics will we cover?

We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin (2 vols). Contact tutor for exact starting point. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We shall be studying the conjugation of verbs, the declension of nouns and adjectives, etc.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-demonstrate basic knowledge of active verbs
-demonstrate basic knowledge of the agreement of adjectives
-demonstrate basic knowledge of infinitives
-demonstrate basic knowledge of imperatives
-demonstrate basic knowledge of simple questions.
-have some insight into the derivation of English words
-have some insight into the world of Rome.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you have already completed Latin 1: Module 1 or have an equivalent level of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work. Translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises.
Homework: about 2 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (CUP) 2 vols. Some copies are available in the Library for use during this course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
