Course outline

What is the course about?

This course aims to further enhance your fluency in reading and translating Latin by gaining a greater knowledge of the structures of Latin grammar.

What topics will we cover?

We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin (2 vols). Contact tutor to see where we begin. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and exercises on current grammatical constructions.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-read and translate Latin with some degree of fluency
-demonstrate knowledge of present participles
-demonstrate knowledge of tenses of subjunctive
-demonstrate knowledge of indirect command
-demonstrate knowledge of conditional sentences.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Latin for about two years. This course is also suitable if you have completed Latin 3 lower: module 1 and module 2 or equivalent. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work. Translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. Homework - about 2-3 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (CUP) 2 vols. Some copies are available in the Library for use during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
