The course aims to improve your fluency in reading Latin and to help you gain a greater knowledge of the structures of Latin grammar.
We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin (2 vols) starting around section 4E/F, reading an adaptation of Cicero's In Verrem and Sallust's Catiline - check with the tutor through the Languages Department for the exact point to start at. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and exercises on grammatical constructions, eg. use of the subjunctive etc.
-demonstrate knowledge of the use of the subjunctive
-demonstrate knowledge of participles.
You should have studied Latin for about two years or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
Whole class work. Translation, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. Homework - about 2 hours per week.
Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (CUP) 2 vols. Some copies are available in the Library for use during the course.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
