Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a course which aims to give you greater confidence in your knowledge of Latin grammar and greater fluency in reading and translating Latin. It is particularly suitable if you are progressing from adapted to unadapted Latin texts. We shall start working from Reading Latin (2 vols) starting around section 6A. Contact tutor for exact starting point. We shall also begin to read some unadapted Caesar.

What topics will we cover?

We shall study Latin grammar using Reading Latin starting at around Section 6A before moving on to Caesar and Colebourn's grammar.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-demonstrate thorough knowledge of gerunds
-demonstrate thorough knowledge of comparative clauses
-demonstrate thorough knowledge of correlatives.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have studied Latin for about 3 years or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Whole class work. Translation at a gentle pace, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. About 2 hours homework per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Reading Latin by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (CUP 2 vols.). Some copies are available in the library for use during the course
Caesar 55 and 54 B.C. Expeditions to Britain ed. John (BCP); Colebourn, Latin Sentence and Idiom (BCP).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
