This is a course which aims to give intermediate students further confidence in their knowledge of Latin grammar and greater fluency in reading and translating Latin. It will help you continue to make the shift from adapted Latin into original texts.
We shall be reading Livy Book XXI ed. Walsh and afterwards Latin Love Elegy. Grammar is reinforced with Colebourn Latin Sentence and Idiom (BCP).
-appreciate the nature of Livian narrative
-demonstrate knowledge of indirect command
-demonstrate knowledge of purpose clauses
-demonstrate knowledge of result clauses.
You should have studied Latin for 3 or 4 years or have an equivalent level of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
Whole class work. Translation at a gentle pace, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. About 2-3 hours homework per week.
