This is a course which aims to give intermediate students further confidence in their knowledge of Latin grammar and greater fluency in reading and translating Latin. It will help you continue to make the shift from adapted Latin into original texts.
We shall be reading from Latin Love Elegy ed. Maltby (BCP) and separately continuing grammar work.
-appreciate the Latin elegies of Catullus, Propertius, Tibullus, Ovid
-demonstrate knowledge of negatives
-demonstrate knowledge of all uses of reported statement
-demonstrate knowledge of time expressions.
You should have studied Latin for 3 or 4 years or have an equivalent level of the language. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
Whole class work. Translation at a gentle pace, grammar instruction, grammatical exercises. About 2-3 hours homework per week.
