What is the course about?

You will read original Latin texts in prose and verse in order to learn as much as possible about the linguistic and stylistic features they reveal as well as to study their separate genres and the historical background of the culture which produced them. This term we will read Cicero's Letters.

What topics will we cover?

Text: Cicero's Letters ed. Shackleton Bailey (CUP)
Detailed study and translation of these varied and vivid letters.
Grammar will also be revised using Wilding, Latin Course for Schools Part 3 (Duckworth).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you are an advanced student and have studied Latin at the City Lit for about four years or have an equivalent knowledge of Latin. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each student will be assigned a small passage to prepare for the next class. General discussion of points arising from the text. We shall also prepare specific syntax exercises from Wilding. Homework: about two hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Cicero's Letters ed. Shackleton Bailey (CUP)
Wilding, Latin Course for Schools Part 3 (Duckworth).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. By ability to translate and comment on passages
Ability to construct sentences into Latin.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
